Nouman Raja had a badge, a gun, and the sworn duty to protect the community. But after he was convicted of shooting stranded motorist Corey Jones dead, the police officer couldn’t get a haircut. He no longer could pump gas in his car. He couldn’t even take his kids to school without permission.
Raja dutifully followed the strict conditions of house arrest for nearly three years, as he awaited his trial.
Now, the former Palm Beach Gardens police officer is a convicted felon facing the next 25 years as Florida prisoner number Q40330.
He remains locked up at the South Florida Reception Center in Doral until he is assigned to one of the state’s prisons. He’ll likely be kept isolated from other inmates. Ex-cops usually are placed in protective custody.
Isolation could mean “you are in a cell 5 or 6 feet wide by 10 feet long, no windows, locked door,” said Michael Frantz, director of Jail Time Consulting. The company counsels people about what to expect in prison. Raja likely will have to clean his own toilet. He’ll possibly get one pillow and one blanket. He’ll get clean clothes after he is permitted to shower, said Frantz, who spent 36 months in a federal prison in Miami for tax evasion.
